knox county, Maine

This house sits on a high, windswept plateau in midcoast Maine. Our client, a life-long entrepreneur, writer, and artist, offered up this challenge: design a house that is of its time, while respecting the architecture of the surrounding agricultural landscape. The forms sought to capture the spirit of farm buildings altered and added to over time, forming complex compositions in the landscape through repetition of simple forms. Interiors are intentionally simple to pull in the views and foliage, and make them an essential part of the architectural experience of living in the house. The main gesture of the principal living space is a poplar ceiling that drapes the space softly like a billowing tent.
